Bull “Alebrije” Hand Carved and Painted by Josefina Carrillo

This powerful bull is part of our collection of Alebrije wood sculptures. It is hand carved and intricately painted by Oscar and Josefina Carrillo, from Arrazola, Oaxaca.

Alebrijes are hand carved and painted wooden figures hailing from the state of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico. The figures are generally carved from the wood of the local Copal tree, and adeptly decorated with acrylic paints. Often entire families work together to carve and paint the figures, with each member contributing a different skill.

The inspiration for these fantastical carved creatures arises from a variety of opposing yet coexisting roots, including indigenous culture, Spanish colonial influence, commercial tourism and local tradition. “Alebrijes” were featured in the 2017 Pixar movie called Coco.

Hand carved from Copal wood, sometimes Cedar wood is used

To avoid loosing its parts over time, its recommended to glue all parts when assembling
